The "Pet Request" Professional Proposal
The Law: You Can Ask for a Pet
Under the Renters' Rights Act 2025, landlords cannot unreasonably refuse a request to keep a pet. They must give a good reason (e.g., the leasehold forbids it, or the property is too small). To get a "Yes," you need to prove you are a responsible owner.
Step 1: The "Pet Resume"
Attach this to your request. It shows you are serious.
Pet Name: [Name] Breed/Type: [Breed] Age: [Age] Vaccinations: Up to date (Records attached) Flea/Worming: Up to date Training: [e.g., House trained, attended puppy school] Reference: [Contact details of previous landlord or vet who can vouch for the pet] Photo: [Attach a cute photo!]
Step 2: The Request Letter
Copy and paste this formal request.
Subject: Request to keep a pet at [Address]
Dear [Landlord Name],
I am writing to formally request permission to keep a pet at the property, in accordance with the Renters' Rights Act 2025. Please allow me to introduce you to [Name]
The pet is a [Breed/Type] named [Name]. I have attached their "Pet Resume" which details their training, health records, and a reference from my previous landlord.
I understand my responsibility to ensure the pet does not cause damage or nuisance to neighbours. I am happy to agree to a condition that I will repair any damage caused by the pet at the end of the tenancy.
Please let me know your decision,.
Sincerely, [Your Name]
Remember to keep it friendly
It's awesome to know your rights and exercise them freely, but remember that you're more likely to get a yes if you include a nice story in your email that explains why you love your pet so much. Landlords are fearful that a pet will damage their property (which they treat as an investment) and therefore their bottom line profit; if you can assure them that you'll cover any pet-related damage, and introduce them to your pet in a way that reassures them, then they're less likely to say no to a pet.
