Flatm8 User Data Charter

Last Updated: 24/11/2025

At Flatm8, we believe your data belongs to you. We are a non-profit social venture built to empower tenants, not to profit from their personal information. This Charter sets out our core promises to you.

1. Our Core Promise

We will never sell, broker, or commercialise your personal data. Flatm8 exists to improve housing standards, not to generate ad revenue. Your data is used solely to run our platform and to support public-interest housing work.

2. What We Collect and Why

We only collect what is strictly necessary to provide our service and verify reviews:

  • Email Address: To create your secure account and verify you are a real person.
  • Address History: To link your reviews to specific properties and verify tenancy where possible.
  • Reviews & Ratings: The content you choose to share about your renting experience.

3. How We Protect Your Data

  • Security First: We use industry-standard encryption for data in transit and at rest.
  • Access Control: Only authorised staff with a specific need can access personal data.
  • Minimisation: We don't ask for more than we need.

4. Sharing for the Public Good

We may share data with trusted partners, but only under these strict conditions:

  • Who: Trade unions, civic technology organisations, public-interest researchers, and social justice groups.
  • Why: Solely for non-profit purposes, such as housing policy research, rights-based advocacy, or improving tenant standards.
  • How: We prioritise anonymised or aggregated data. If personal data is strictly necessary (e.g., for a union verification), it is shared under strict data protection agreements.

5. Your Control

You are in charge.

  • Transparency: You can ask us what data we hold about you at any time.
  • Deletion: You can delete your account and personal data whenever you choose.
  • Export: You have the right to a copy of your data.

6. Our Accountability

We are accountable to our community. We regularly review our practices to ensure we live up to these values. If we get it wrong, we want to know so we can fix it.
